Building an academic career. From supercomplexity to modest simplicity

O wykładowcy

Prof. D. Robert Iskander defended his doctorate in 1997 (Queensland University of Technology, Australia), and obtained his habilitation in 2010 (Silesian University of Technology). In February 2021, he received the title of professor of engineering and technical sciences. His research mainly concerns signal and image processing methods and their application in ophthalmology, but he also deals with visual optics, optometric and ophthalmic instrumentation. Prof. Iskander is the co-author of over 300 international scientific papers. He is also the co-author of 13 international patents, mainly concerning the construction of contact lenses. He has graduated 24 PhDs to date. Currently, he is the director of the HealthTech Synergy Hub and the head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Since 2020, he has been a member of the Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

AutoEncoder based approach for the identification of genomic regions responsible for poorly described oligo-patient disorders

O wykładowcy

As she writes about herself: "I like to modify existing methodologies to make them fit specific biological data structures and hypotheses, taking into account the statistical, but also the computational aspects of the problem. For small data, which is often used in clinical genetics, I find it very interesting to meticulously extract all possible sources of information and to carefully exploit the statistical properties of the methods, since their asymptotic properties often do not hold. For large datasets, I would like to tackle computational efficiency, and although I am not a computer scientist by training, I always emphasise the use of efficient programming. Since I have always been keen on statistical modelling, I really like using mixed (mostly linear) models for various data structures. Privately, in love with Deep Learning."

Enhancing Caries Prevention through Functional Dental Sealants

O wykładowcy

Dr. Paweł J. Piszko is an Assistant Professor at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, where he works in the field of biomaterials, with research spanning dentistry and tissue engineering. Dr Paweł’s research focuses on the development of novel dental biomaterials with enhanced cariostatic and remineralization properties for application in conservative dentistry. His subsequent work explores the synthesis of functional polymeric matrices for tissue engineering applications. He is the principal investigator of a Miniatura grant funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), focused on the post-synthetic modifications of polyesters obtained using microwave-assisted processes. Dr. Piszko has authored 26 international scientific publications, with over 650 citations to date. He is also a recipient of the START scholarship from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), awarded to outstanding early-career researchers.
